  1. The Genius Investor Caynabo project is a successful humanitarian initiative that established a solar-powered water desalination plant in Caynabo, Sool, providing clean drinking water to the local community.

Project Overview

  • Goal: To provide safe, clean drinking water to the residents of Caynabo, who previously relied on a famous but increasingly brackish (saline) well, leading to poor hygiene and health issues like kidney stones.
  • Key Partners: The project was primarily funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The system was supplied by the Italian partner Genius Watter and installed by Aptech Africa.
  • Technology: The facility uses a solar-powered reverse osmosis (RO) desalination system, which runs entirely on a 41 kWp photovoltaic power supply without the need for batteries, ensuring sustainability and low operational costs.
  • Impact: The plant produces approximately 50,000 liters (45 m³) of drinking water per day, transforming the lives of residents who no longer have to travel long distances or purchase expensive bottled water. It serves both human residents and local wildlife/livestock.

Sustainability and Management

To ensure the project's long-term success, a public-private partnership (PPP) model was established involving the Somaliland Ministry of Water, Genius Investor, a local operator, and the UNDP.

Genius Investor is responsible for the plant's long-term operation and maintenance, while a detailed business plan helps manage the facility and keep water affordable.
